FIGHTING FOOD WASTE

All of our stores participate in a food waste donation program.

FOOD
RUNNERS

They pick up food waste from our SF and Peninsula locations. They not only help alleviate hunger, but they also create community. Since COVID-19, they’ve acquired a kitchen and hired Chefs to create meals from the donated food. They then distribute the meals to the homeless and seniors.

SF-MARIN
FOOD BANK

Their Fresh Rescue Program picks up food waste form our Marin locations. San Francisco-Marin Food Bank has been recovering and redistributing surplus foods for nearly 30 years. Every week, over 53,000 households count on them for food assistance. March year-to-date they have rescued 1.1M pounds of food from grocery stores and that represents 2% of all their inbound food.

SF RECOLOGY & MARIN SANITARY SERVICES

All of our markets recycle and compost. Waste Zero helps businesses apply best practices. Marin Sanitary Service picks up food waste from our Greenbrae store, and what is left over goes to San Francisco-Marin Food Bank. The program takes food waste and converts the material into a biogas through anaerobic digestion. It provides a power source and avoids methane emissions at landfills.

REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURE

We are so proud to carry brands that have adopted sustainable or regenerative agriculture practices. Regenerative Agriculture is a conservation and rehabilitation approach to farming systems that focuses on rebuilding nutrient dense topsoil which increases nutrient density in our food, increasing biodiversity, improving water cycles, and increasing resilience to climate change by drawing down atmospheric carbon dioxide by growing plants that move carbon dioxide into the soil. This holistic approach makes food better for us and better for the planet.

SUSTAINABLE MEAT & SEAFOOD

We proudly offer many products with a focus on sustainability and regenerative farming practices that ensures traceability, environmental sustainability, humane animal handling, and responsible resource management like Piedmontese Beef. We are also committed to offering a variety of responsibly sourced wild-caught and farm-raised seafood certified by organizations like the Aquaculture Stewardship Council and the Marine Stewardship Council.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

We are always looking for ways to make our stores more energy efficient, like using LED energy-saving lighting systems in all of our remodeled stores. Our locations with living walls use recycled water, reduce ambient temperature and noise, and increase biodiversity.
